Missing the doorbell in your apartment? Signolux can help

You are standing at the shared entrance of an apartment building and ring the bell. Upstairs, the buzzer sounds, but your mother does not hear it. Or you are in your living room while the intercom in the hallway is too quiet. To you, nobody seems to be calling; to your visitor, the door stays closed.

A suitable Signolux transmitter and receiver can relay the existing doorbell sound as light, sound or a tactile alert, depending on the receiver. Here is how to distinguish the downstairs entrance bell from your own apartment doorbell, and which combination you can test at home.

    What is Signolux?

Signolux is a wireless alerting system from Humantechnik. The manufacturer now uses the name lisa-signolux, so you may see both names on product pages and in manuals.

A transmitter detects an event, such as your doorbell ringing, and sends a radio signal. The receiver turns that signal into a visible, audible or tactile alert. The available alerts depend on the receiver model and any accessories.

Transmitter and receiver: what does each part do?

    The transmitter at the source

The transmitter belongs to the event you want to notice. For an existing doorbell, you can use an acoustic transmitter that detects the ringing through a microphone. A Signolux doorbell button instead sends an alert when someone presses it.

Other transmitters are available within the system. First decide which event you want to relay. A receiver with a telephone symbol does not detect a call or ringing on its own: it needs a suitable transmitter.

    The receiver where you are

Place the receiver where you can notice the alert, such as your living room. Coloured symbols help you recognise which event has been detected.

A stationary receiver with a flashing light can be useful if you usually stay in the same room. A mobile vibrating receiver may be an option if you want to feel alerts while moving around the house. Check the exact model and its power supply.

The downstairs bell and your apartment doorbell

An apartment may have two separate bell points: the shared entrance, which calls through your intercom or buzzer, and the bell at your own apartment door. Start where the ringing sounds inside your home. Place the acoustic transmitter at that sound source and the receiver where you can notice the warning.

Want separate alerts for both bells? Check which transmitter each one needs. Humantechnik specifies a separate acoustic universal transmitter for each application. A receiver or doorbell button alone does not pick up your existing intercom sound.

A Signolux combination for your existing intercom

The Signolux Acoustic Universal Transmitter A-2656-W detects sound through an external microphone. Place it at the source of your doorbell sound. For an intercom, this is where the call signal comes out.

This transmitter can also detect a telephone ringing. There is an important restriction: each application needs its own transmitter. You cannot use one acoustic transmitter for your doorbell and telephone at the same time.

The supplied microphone cable is one metre long. The transmitter runs on three AAA batteries. Check where the bell sounds and where the microphone and transmitter can be positioned. Test your actual ringing signal before permanently mounting anything.

Receiver S: flashing light and sound

A suitable receiver is the Signolux Receiver S A-2616-W. It shows alerts with coloured symbols and has an all-round flashing light.

You can select sound only, sound with flashing light, or flashing light only. There are 16 tones and sound sequences. Start with a low volume and increase it only if needed.

The Receiver S comes with a mains adapter and rechargeable batteries. The batteries also provide power during a temporary mains outage. The AUX connection accepts a suitable vibrating accessory; check its exact model before choosing one.

For an existing doorbell buzzer or intercom, a practical combination is an acoustic transmitter at the sound source and a Receiver S in the room where you are. When choosing a doorbell kit, check whether its transmitter can detect your existing bell. Individual products form a working system only when all the necessary parts are present and set up correctly.

How to test the system at home

    1. Decide which alert you want and choose its transmitter.
    2. Place the microphone at the sound source and the receiver in its intended position.
    3. Set up the alert according to your model's manual.
    4. Ask someone to ring at the shared entrance and check that the intercom or buzzer triggers the Signolux alert.
    5. If you also have an apartment doorbell, test it separately with its chosen transmitter and check the displayed symbol.
    6. Repeat the test with doors closed and from the places where you usually sit.
    7. Mount the parts permanently only once reception works properly in that position.

Walls, ceilings and metal objects can weaken the radio signal. A stated range does not tell you exactly how the system will work in your home. If an alert does not arrive, check the power supply, settings and distance between transmitter and receiver. Try another position too.

Expanding the system: check compatibility first

You can add receivers to a lisa-signolux installation, for example in a second room. For another type of alert, you also need the appropriate transmitter.

Lisa-signolux is not compatible with the older lisaFunk system. The name lisa on a device is not enough to establish compatibility. Check the complete system name and article number before ordering.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is a receiver alone enough?

No. Relaying a doorbell or telephone alert also requires a suitable transmitter. The receiver does not detect these sounds by itself.

Do I have to replace my doorbell?

Not necessarily with an acoustic solution. The microphone picks up your existing bell. Test whether it works with your actual ringing signal and the intended placement.

Can I use Signolux without sound?

The Receiver S has a flashing-light-only setting. The event symbols still identify the alert. For tactile alerts, you need a suitable vibrating receiver or accessory.

    Which combination suits your home?

Start with the alert you miss most often. Note where the sound comes from and where you want to receive the warning. Then check that your order includes the correct transmitter and receiver.
